 Outgoing federal treasurer Peter Costello says the new Labor government must be prevented from raiding the Future Fund. The $61 billion Future Fund was established to cover public service superannuation liabilities in future years. Labor has said it will tap the fund for over $2 billion to help build a nationwide broadband network. "I do want to say to the superannuation industry, financial writers and everybody else, do no let an incoming government raid that Future Fund," Costello told journalists in Melbourne. "Once that Future Fund is opened for any purpose it is open for all purposes. "This is something that is much more important than politics for the long-term interest for this country," he said. Costello said he had decided not to stand for the position of opposition leader, but would continue to serve as the member for the Melbourne seat of Higgins.
