Several Victorian local councils have implemented new hardware from vendor 3Com as they upgrade their telephony and data networks.

"3Com and key partner Generation-e have recently signed deals with several councils for solutions that feature IP telephony, wireless, switching and security products, which reach more than 5,000 council staff," a statement issued by 3Com this morning said.

Nillumbik Shire, Maribyrnong City and Wangaratta Rural City councils installed intrusion prevention systems from 3Com's subsidiary TippingPoint in the middle months of this year.

In June, Wangaratta also installed a 5500G-EI switch, a NBX v3000 IP telephony system with some 400 handsets, and power over Ethernet switching. In March, Benalla Rural City Council installed outdoor wireless network links, while Glen Eira City Council in September put in a 5500G-EI switch.

3Com was unwilling to disclose the cost of each implementation.
