Internet service provider (ISP) iiNet will invest a further AU$15 million into expanding its ADSL2+ network which should increase its coverage to 90 percent of metropolitan Australia, the ISP announced today. The additional funding would allow the nation's third largest ISP to install another 150 DSLAMs (DSL Access Multiplexers) in exchanges around Australia by January 2007, according to iiNet chief executive officer Michael Malone. "In addition to the AU$15 million investment, we will be investing in alternative dark fibre backhaul infrastructure with PIPE Networks, a leading provider of telecommunications infrastructure," Malone said. "This dual supplier strategy will deliver lower cost backhaul transmission, with unlimited bandwidth for a fixed price, and significantly increased capacity for future bandwidth demand," he said. "The continued investment in the development of our next generation ADSL2+ network reduces our dependence on Telstra wholesale services with the end benefit to our customers of faster broadband speeds and greater reliability." ADSL2+ services provide speeds of around 24,000kbps, ideal for downloading data, voice and video.
