iiNet signals push into online music, movies By Renai LeMay, ZDNet Australia May 04, 2005 URL: http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/communications/soa/iiNet-signals-push-into-online-music-movies/0,130061791,139190486,00.htm
Internet service provider iiNet has registered key trademarks which reveal it is considering a push into movies and music delivered over the Internet. The trademarks -- 'iimovies', 'iimusic' and 'iimedia' -- were filed on 28 January with IP Australia, the federal government agency responsible for granting patent and trademark rights. While iiNet's public relations spokesperson today confirmed the company was considering a push into content-driven services, she could not confirm any details regarding concrete product plans or dates for launch. The trademarks are consistent with iiNet's branding strategy. Some of the company's other products are 'iidialup', 'iibroadband' and 'iiphone'. Although iiNet is Australia's third-largest Internet service provider, it has so far avoided diversifying into content services as have the top two ISPs, BigPond and Optus. Gerry Sutton, who heads up Telstra's Media department, told The New Zealand Herald  this week his company would launch television-over-Internet in 2005. The move will complement BigPond-branded online DVD rental and computer game download services. In addition, major ISP Internode recently told ZDNet Australia  it would launch a video-on-demand service early in 2006. The service would be available to subscribers on the company's next-generation ADSL2 broadband network which has recently gone live, and would take the form of a set-top box to sit on top of consumers' televisions.
