ACA to consult industry on comms regulation By Staff writers, ZDNet Australia December 04, 2003 URL: http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/communications/soa/ACA-to-consult-industry-on-comms-regulation/0,130061791,120281615,00.htm
The Australian Communications Authority (ACA) will consult service providers, manufacturers and consumer groups in developing future communications regulation strategy. The consultation is a part of a new initiative, named "Vision 20/20: the Future Form of Communications Regulation," which aims to predict the communications landscape in the year 2020. The ACA says it the initiative will be "taking into account the current regulatory framework including the long-term interests of end-users; and [the] efficiency and international competitiveness of the Australian telecommunications industry". The ACA's acting chairman, Dr Bob Horton, said even societal change will be considered. "Vision 20/20 will have a broad policy and regulatory perspective in recognition of trends in industry and regulatory convergence, together with evolving societal changes in thinking and how it might impact on the future way we behave as an industry," he was quoted as saying in a statement release by the regulator today. The ACA is currently "in the research phase" of the new project, with workshops to follow in March and April next year. "The workshops will provide input for a proposed joint ACA/Australian Communications Industry Summit planned for July next year," Horton said.
