Telstra has launched a business-grade DSL service targeting businesses with 50 or more employees. The telecommunications carrier's data sales and solutions managing director, Paul Geason, said the Business DSL service would be available to companies within the footprint of 65 exchanges initially, to be expanded to 240 by Christmas. All capital cities will be covered, as well as key regional centres such as Townsville, Bendigo, Dubbo, Albany, Mt Gambier, Alice Springs and Launceston. "By then, Telstra's business-grade DSL service will deliver a bigger coverage footprint than all of our competitors combined, with a presence in both metropolitan and major regional centres," Geason said. The service utilises SHDSL (Symmetrical High Bit Rate Digital Subscriber Line) technology to provide broadband connections at speeds of ranging from 512 kilobits per second to 2 megabits per second over a dedicated copper line. Telstra officials said pricing would be flexible, but cited an approximate rate of AU$2,650 for a 512 kilobits/second service encompassing four metropolitan area sites, rising to AU$4,400 for 2 megabits/second service encompassing four metro sites. The carrier is targeting 99.95 percent availability for the service.
