Primus snaps up more WiFi hotspots By Staff writers, ZDNet Australia August 25, 2003 URL: http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/communications/soa/Primus-snaps-up-more-WiFi-hotspots/0,130061791,120277698,00.htm
Primus Telecom today announced it signed an agreement with Xone that will allow its customers to access 39 new wireless hotspots. The hotspots -- located in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and south-east Queensland -- cover cafes, hotels and restaurants, and will boost Primus's total hotspot count to over 100. Primus has an existing relationship with Hudson Conway subsidiary Azure Wireless -- it was the first ISP to sign up with the start-up company, which received an initial cash injection of $50 million from its parent. The wireless space is heating up, with Personal Broadband Australia currently conducting trials of its iBurst wireless Internet service among 400 Ozemail and Vodafone customers. Unlike other offerings, the iBurst service isn't based on the 802.11 protocol -- the company claims its network is "carrier grade". The company, which began life as CKW Wireless, received its initial investment from US based ArrayComm, Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Australia and Kyocera.
