Telstra is planning a security and network performance upgrade to boost customer confidence in Wi-Fi after acquiring network assets from Wireless Local Area Network operator SkyNetGlobal.

Telstra's group managing director, consumer and marketing, Ted Pretty, revealed in a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange the carrier would "upgrade security and performance at its various Wi-Fi sites and would be announcing further moves in this market in the coming months".

No details about Telstra's plans were immediately available.

Pretty's statements came as Telstra said today it had completed the transaction to acquire SkyNetGlobal's Wi-Fi assets for AU$3.3 million, allowing it to deliver broadband wireless access at locations such as Qantas Club lounges and Rydges Hotels.

SkyNetGlobal said the deal fulfilled its plan, announced to the market seven months ago, to transform itself from a wireless broadband infrastructure provider to a service provider.

The company's chief executive officer, Jonathon Soon, said its customers would continue to gain access to network sites through a roaming agreement signed with Telstra.

SkyNetGlobal first announced plans to divest assets involved in the provision of WLAN services at Rydges Hotels in Australia and New Zealand to Telstra on 3 December.

'Wi-Fi' allows devices such as laptop or palmtop computers equipped with wireless cards to connect to the Internet at designated sites, or 'hotspots,' using 802.11b technology at speeds of up to 2 Mb per second.
