NSW education gets broadband boost

The NSW Government's push to improve regional Internet services has taken a step forward, with plans afoot to roll out broadband services to regional schools.

The NSW Department of Education and Training (NSW DET) has awarded a tender to provide broadband services in regional schools, as well as Technical and Further Education sites.

NSW DET awarded the tender to SP Telecommunications and partner-operation ntl Telecommunications. The companies teamed up to provide regional Australia with broadband service in February.

ntl Telecommunications provides wholesale broadband services to SP Telecommnunications and NSW Central Coast-based NBN Television.

SP Telecommunications said that the contract's profitability would depend on the speed with which the service could be rolled out, and the amount of traffic the sites would generate on its network.

NSW DET has declined the opportunity to provide any details about the value of the tender in lieu of an official announcement of the tender by the Minister's office.

A spokesperson for NSW DET said the Minister's office has asked SP Telecommunications not to announce the deal without its official sanction.

NTL Incorporated sold ntl Telecommunications to Macquarie Bank in April this year when it divested itself of its interest in ntl Telecommunication's parent National Transmission Network.

SP Telecommunications resells Internet services through its residential arm Kooee Communications.
