Telstra ADSL gets users down

The patience of Telstra ADSL customers is being tested today, with technical difficulties hampering the service in multiple Australian states.

Telstra ADSL customers across Queensland, ACT and Victoria felt the affects of unexplained technical glitches that saw 400 NSW subscribers knocked off line early today.

Although Telstra's initial alert regarding the outage included all four states, the company said it chose to scale-down the report as NSW customers have experienced the main impact of the outage.

Telstra said the outage has affected 13 areas of the southern half of the state. Worst affected customers are located in Bowral, Cooma, Deniliquin, Griffith, Glenfield, Lamington, Merimbula, Mittagong and the southern region of Wagga Wagga.

"At 1.30pm we estimated that about half the areas had their service restored and the rest are expected to be restored by 4pm," said a Telstra spokesperson.

The cause of the outage is unknown at this stage but Telstra believes the source of the problem lies with its Customer Multiplexer Universal Exchange (CMUX).

"We're not sure of the full extent or why the technical difficulties occurred and we will carry out a post-incident review from today to determine the root cause," the spokesperson said.

Telstra said it doesn't expect today's outage to impact on its wholesale ADSL customers. However, Caritas Australia told ZDNet Australia that its iPrimus' ADSL service - which piggy-backs Telstra's ADSL service - went down at 12.20pm today. A link between the two events is yet to be established.

iPrimus said it has experienced no outages on its customer network today.

While Telstra technicians work on restoring the service, the company has apologised to its customers and thanked them for their patience.
