Youth speak out at the WCIT 2002

In an attempt to open up the scope of the World Congress on IT 2002, three Australian university students have been asked to take the podium alongside speakers such as Bill Clinton and NASDAQ vice chairman Al Berkeley.

Representing the "Voice of Youth", each day will see a different speaker address the general themes of the congress.

Diana Howard, who will take the stage alongside Clinton and Australia's Prime Minister John Howard, is completing a Phd on distributed systems and compliance at the University of Adelaide.

Having studied an unusual mixture of history and computer science she is keen to draw some parallels between the world many of the delegates would have experienced in their youth, and that which will be experienced by the youth of today in years to come.

-The theme on the first day is 'unleashing the power' of IT and the Internet, so I want to have a look at how it has already changed our lives and in what ways it will continue to do so," Howard said. -The congress will provide delegates with a much broader picture of the sorts of opportunities that exist and what sorts of directions we want to take as a global community."

Speaking on the second day, and on the verge of completing his Phd thesis at the University of Adelaide, Darren Gawley plans to address some of the issues surrounding emerging work patterns within the IT industry.

-As someone who is just about to enter a career I would like to provide a young person's perspective on what careers and training will look like in the years to come," Gawley said. -I would really like to have an impact on the minds of the people in the audience, who are the ones really making the decisions about how these things will operate in the future."

Gracing the stage on the final day of the congress will be 17 year old Aparna Rao, whose speech at Australia's recent Centenary of Federation celebrations initially inspired WCIT 2002 CEO John Gygar to integrate the youth element into the congress' proceedings.

-On the final day Aparna will be addressing issues surrounding access to technology and responsibility as part of a global community," Howard said. -She is about the most accomplished speaker amongst us, and she will be dealing with some complex and interesting issues."
