Yahoo Australia waiting for news on staff cuts

As part of an international restructure Yahoo has announced it will be cutting about 12 percent of its staff globally, although it won't be clear how the changes will effect Australia for another four to five weeks.

The announcement comes in the wake of Yahoo's so called -analyst day" in which the company's financial analysts, draw up financial plans and market direction for the coming year.

According to local Yahoo representative Anna Featherstone the analysts have already indicated that the cuts will mostly effect the company's broadcast, lifestyle and B2B offerings, which did not have any real presence in the Australia marketplace.

-We were developing custom corporate level broadcasting for conferences and so fourth," Featherstone said. -Basically those custom solutions have been developed to the point where we can offer turnkey solutions, so the cuts will effect some of the people working on that development phase of the project."

Featherstone also indicated that some international management positions would be lost.

Although Yahoo's Australian team is bracing itself for bad news, local operations may be saved from the worst of the cuts, as they were not directly involved in any of the projects falling under the axe.

Featherstone also indicated that the announced reduction of 400 positions would be mediated as the company looked to strengthen other areas.

-Globally we will be putting on another 100 staff in a couple of key areas, so the net reduction in staff will only be about 300," Featherstone said.
