Xbox takes off down under

Xbox sales have leapt upwards, corresponding with the launch of the Xbox Live online gaming service.

Figures released by GfK Marketing Services Australia revealed that 32 percent of the 'next generation' console market was taken by Xbox during September. Sales of the Microsoft console grew by 12 percent in the July 1-September 30 period, while sales of Sony's Playstation 2 fell by eight percent and sales of Ninendo's Gamecube dropped by 15 percent, according to GfK.

Xbox Live starter kits are reported as selling well by Xbox since the launch three weeks ago. "The reaction has been strong to Live," said Rod Orrock, National Manager, Computers and Communications, Harvey Norman. "Consumers have really jumped on board with this service, and it's been hard to keep up with demand."

GfK also report the sale of Xbox games increased by 154 percent in the July-September quarter compared to the same quarter in 2002. Xbox see the launch of its Live service as key to capturing market share, and plan to have 50 Live-enabled games on the market by Xmas.
