Unisys is close to sealing a AU$140 million desktop services contract with the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA), after it was named preferred tenderer.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Andrew Robb, said the company had been assessed as offering the best value for money at this stage for the IT services required.

-Unisys will provide a one stop shop for service and help with IT issues including an IT service desk, internet and e-mail security, and desktop services," Robb said.

Creating a single point of contact service desk -- to coordinate all IT inquiries, issues and incidents -- by April 2007 would be one of Unisys' top priorities, according to Robb.

A Unisys contract could be in place by mid-December, subject to successful negotiations, said Robb.

The contract length will be four years, with two one-year extension options.

If DIMA is unable to seal the deal with Unisys, it may then negotiate with runner-up CSC.

Other vendors to have pitched for the contract include IBM and Getronics.

Last week DIMA signed a three-year, AU$200 million contract with IBM as part of the department's four-year Systems for People project.
