Union officials have called for an urgent hearing at the Australian Industrial Relations Commission in order to prevent layoffs it fears are on the horizon at Vodafone.

The Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU) told ZDNet Australia yesterday that it had demanded discussions with Vodafone over rumours of imminent job losses and had plans to take the matter to the IRC if the telecoms player refused to disclose its intentions to the Union. Vodafone has so far refused to confirm or deny the speculation with the Union.

The Communications and Public Sector Union (CPSU) told ZDNet Australia this morning that it took the matter to the Commission last night and is -expecting a listing within the next 24 hours".

"We want no job cuts to occur before we're able to go through Vodafone's plans with a fine-toothed comb and see what justification there is, if any, for any job cuts," CPSU assistant secretary, communications sector, Stephen Jones, said.

Vodafone's determination to remain tight-lipped over looming retrenchments -is part of the problem," according to Jones, who said the Unions still have no concrete evidence to support the rumours, which suggest 1000 positions will be made redundant.

Vodafone told ZDNet Australia that it is -not removed" from the downturn in the telecommunications arena and confirmed that job losses would be made but said there were -no definitive number of positions" allocated for elimination.
