Uncertainty over Deloitte's tech layoffs

Deloitte Consulting plans to cut 10 percent of its workforce in Australia, but has refused to reveal what proportion of the cuts would be in the technology or outsourcing areas of its business.

A spokesperson from Deloitte Consulting said there were about 1000 people in its Australian practice, which would put the headcount for the job cuts at 100 staff. She said that the job cuts would be -across the board", but would not comment on whether or not the company envisaged further staff cuts this year.

The Deloitte business comprises of four sectors -- people; technology; outsourcing; strategy & operation.

When announcing the layoffs a spokesperson said this was a result of a review of its client service capacity, against its view of the current market demand.

-In Australia and New Zealand the management consulting industry has seen the demand for professional services fluctuate as economic uncertainty grew," the spokesperson said. -Some major organisations have expanded their use of services, while many others have contracted. Many buyers are taking longer to make capital management decisions."
