Sun Australia denies lay-off rumours

Sun Microsystems Australia has denied rumours the company has begun laying off staff as part of a global cut-back of 6,000 staff.

"There is definitely nothing of that nature happening here in Australia," a spokesperson for the company told ZDNet Australia. "There haven't been any announcements out of the US pertaining to global level."

Sun's denial comes amidst a surge of rumours that it plans to shrink its workforce, with one claiming cutbacks in Australia are already underway. Some observers believe the cutbacks are scheduled to start within the next two weeks.

However, according to Sun's spokesperson a recent restructuring has lead to a flatter reporting system after a series of retirements in the upper echelons of the company. However, she added, the company's overall head count has not been affected in any way.

"The restructuring has been implemented over the last couple of months and is now complete. We do not expect any other changes to take place in the near future," the spokesperson said.
