Sun Australia chasing application server market

Sun Microsystems Australia is positioning itself for the services on demand market, and placing its hopes in Sun ONE.

-There is a tremendous amount of effort going into Sun ONE," Duncan Bennett, managing director of iPlanet Australia told ZDNet Australia. -Sun ONE is our key initiative in the software space."

Sun ONE is a platform based on iPlanet, Solaris Operating Environment and Forte Tools. It is open standards based, allowing users to integrate their own software with it.

-The application server is just one piece of the infrastructure that people need to enable their business. There are a lot of things you need to provide; directory server; portal technology; Web server, all these components reside in Sun ONE," Bennett said.

Sun is currently ranked third in the global application server software market, and is in the middle of a direct mail campaign to increase their market share in Australia. This ties in with the global strategy, as reported inCNET, of plans to renew its software efforts with numerous product updates and strategy announcements in the next three months.

The marketing plans for Sun ONE also include a stand at the World IT Congress in Adelaide with a number of key executives coming out to Australia in the next few weeks to add international weight.
