Steady rise for Aussie IT jobs

Online information technology and telecommunications job ads in Australia have risen for the third month in a row, according to Olivier Recruitment Group.

There were 433 more online IT&T job ads in June compared to May across the sites surveyed, an increase of 7.5 percent. The number of IT&T job ads in June was 10.8 percent higher than three months ago, and 13 percent higher than six months ago. However, the volume of ads is still 18.9 percent lower than that experienced 12 months ago.

"There has been three months of sustained improvement," Robert Olivier, the director of Olivier Recruitment told ZDNet Australia  . "It's not massive compared to what it was before...[but] there's been a marked improvement in the last six months."

Olivier said that the number of job ads didn't seem to be linked to economic growth, as during the previous periods of strong economic growth employment suffered. He also expects the privatisation of Telstra to have an impact on the market because it's such a significant event in the industry, but its too early to tell whether that impact will be positive or negative and how strong it will be.

The largest increase in terms of number of job ads was in the Software Development and Engineering section, which grew by 6.43 percent. Management and Sales jobs rose by 5.74 percent while Network Communications and Security jobs rose by 8.95 percent. Jobs in Database Development and Management increased by 17.8 percent, but Olivier pointed out this equated to a rise from 200 ads to 238 ads.

The Olivier Internet Job Index surveys the online job boards of Seek, MyCareer and CareerOne, which together account for almost half of unique visitors to Australian employment Web sites by Australian based users.
