Added to the existing Sydney and Auckland nodes, this gives the company "a reasonable footprint to cover the needs of companies with major footprints in Australia," said director of product management - data services, Barry Tishgart.
Around 40 percent of global businesses resident in Australia are in Melbourne, noted David Eagle, managing director for Australia and New Zealand.
"It's all driven by customer demand," said Eagle, explaining that Sprint commissions and provisions nodes after signing contracts with customers, avoiding the "build it and they will come" mentality.
In Australia, Sprint focuses on carriers, ISPs and the local operations of global businesses. In line with these philosophies, the "anchor tenant" for the new Melbourne node is fibre broadband carrier Uecomm.
The architecture used by Sprint is very scalable, according to Eagle, so the company can respond to new contracts in days or weeks rather than months. "The way we provision services is the same everywhere," he said.
