The Commonwealth Bank of Australia manager responsible for technology sourcing strategy has defected to the institution's outsourcing partner, Electronic Data Systems, to take up a key business development position.

Jim Stabback -- who had held the post of executive general manager of service development with technology services at the CBA -- is to head EDS' business process outsourcing unit.

The move comes as the CBA winds down its 10-year, AU$5 billion technology services contract with EDS originally signed in 1997. The bank recently sold its 35 percent holding in EDS Australia back to EDS, saying it no longer considered the investment as core to its business.

Stabback moves to EDS after a four-year stint at the CBA, before which he held senior posts at Telstra and Westpac.

Iain Blacklaw, vice-president of service delivery for EDS Asia-Pacific, said "the appointment of Mr Stabback will greatly strengthen EDS' market-leading design and delivery of BPO services in the region, and our focus on helping clients leverage technology to streamline operations, improve customer service and manage costs".

An EDS spokeswoman was not immediately available for comment on the appointment.
