SAP tries to lure small firms from Oracle

Business applications maker SAP said Wednesday it has created another so-called safe-passage program designed to lure customers away from rival Oracle -- this time aiming it at small and midsize businesses.

The marketing initiative is an attempt to capitalise on uncertainty around Oracle's plans as it works to integrate PeopleSoft products following its acquisition of that company earlier this year. SAP has tried similar programs aimed at attracting larger Oracle customers and clients in the retail industry.

As part of the effort, SAP is offering license discounts to companies using software made by PeopleSoft and J.D. Edwards, another applications maker acquired by Oracle as part of its PeopleSoft deal. Delivered via SAP's channel partners, the new safe-passage program promises an applications discount of 75 percent to customers that are willing to move to SAP software and that meet certain conditions.
