The American Red Cross has launched an online network to help unite families with survivors of Tuesday's airborne attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.
The agency said in a statement late Saturday that the Family Registration Web would be available for victims to self-register on the Web site, helping the agency respond to 6700 inquiries received from concerned friends and family about the fate of missing loved ones.
No personal information about the survivors would be shared over the Internet, the organisation said, but those registered would be notified when an inquiry about them was made by a family member or friend.
As many as 5000 people are feared dead after two hijacked commercial airliners crashed into and destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Centre, a New York landmark, and 187 people are unaccounted for in the Pentagon attack.
