Qantas confirms Sydney data centre review

Qantas has confirmed its intention to review the future operation of its Sydney data centre, with outsourcing high on the list of possible changes, chief information officer Fiona Balfour has confirmed.

In a statement issued yesterday, Balfour said "As part of a review of IT services, we have reached the conclusion that our current infrastructure and equipment no longer meet our continually growing IT needs.

"We have therefore begun looking at possible alternative arrangements for the future.

"These include outsourcing data centre operations to experienced service providers who can acquire and manage the delivery of these services on our behalf".

Balfour said the airline would keep the 230 staff involved "fully informed" during the review process, which was likely to take 12 months.

"Should we proceed with any outsourcing arrangement, all staff would be offered employment with the new service provider or, where necessary, redeployment within Qantas".

Total BS... her statement &quo ...Anonymous -- 03/12/03

Total BS... her statement "These include outsourcing data centre operations to experienced service providers..." who in their right mind would give Telstra, who is not an experienced in IT, an outsourcing deal when they are up against experienced companies like EDS, CSC etc. Balfour is pushing outsourcing and partnerships without thinking about the future and potential problems. I can see Qantas in big trouble because of her single minded approach in an area she knows nothing about.
