Qantas appoints new CIO

Qantas has announced its new chief information officer (CIO), with current head of IT business services John Willett to take over the reins from Fiona Balfour, who is departing for the CIO role at Telstra.

The appointment is part of a new executive structure at the Australian airline, announced in a statement today.

Heading an information technology services division that sits separate from a new Qantas Shared Services area, Willett reports to chief financial officer and executive general manager strategy, Peter Gregg. Balfour -- who is set to join Telstra in April -- previously also looked after shared services such as property, procurement and financial services in her expanded role as executive general manager business services.

Willett -- who starts in his new role on 20 February -- was previously one of Balfour's direct reports.

The airline announced the new executive structure with its half year results, which recorded a net profit after tax of $352.6 million.
