Qantas today confirmed its high-profile chief information officer, Fiona Balfour, had resigned and would leave the airline in March next year.

A spokesperson for the airline confirmed Balfour's plan to depart and the timing but would give no further details.

Balfour is presently spearheading a massive information technology transformation project which last year saw infrastructure and telecommunications outsourced to IBM and Telstra respectively in deals worth a combined total of AU$1.4 billion.

In October, the carrier undertook a massive shift of its mainframe environment from a data centre in central Sydney to an IBM facility in Baulkham Hills on the outskirts of the city.
