QLD govt pushes ICT exports

Queensland Government is looking to push the state's technology exports, with the launch of an ICT export portal yesterday.

Paul Lucas, Queensland Minister for Innovation and Information Economy, said the portal was aimed at encouraging Queensland companies to work cooperatively with each other, sharing common experiences.

One of the things we have in Queensland are great SMEs in the ICT industry, Lucas said.

Lucas sees the export portal providing a mechanism for these SMEs to get the message across more easily about the products they offer.

According to Lucas, Queensland Government has also appointed a specialist ICT trade representative, who is based at Queensland House in London. He said this was to try and open doors for the state's ICT businesses wanting to break into UK or European markets.

The export portal builds on an earlier version which was set up as an online directory of Queensland ICT companies, where users can drill down by various criteria, such as postcode, business, or market type.

Lucas said that the export portal was part of an approach by Queensland Government to increase exports from the state. -We've set in place some clear indicators to help measure our progress in generating export earnings," he said.

The aim is to increase the value of knowledge-intensive exports by 50 percent over the next five years, and to increase the number of Queensland exporters by 20 percent.

The export portal was a joint industry and government initiative.
