Power outage downs Di Data keynote

A power outage in Queensland caused disruption to a keynote address this morning at Dimension Data's annual conference in Coolum.

The power outage occurred at the time Howard Charney, senior vice president at Cisco Systems, was giving his keynote.

Merle Singer, marketing director at Dimension Data, said there had been a 45 minute outage at the conference. Only one power module was lost during the outage, with its AU$7 million network protected by UPS.

Energex Australia has confirmed that a power outage, affecting the areas of Coolum and Kenilworth, commenced at about 9.45am.

An Energex spokesperson said it had been progressively restoring customers, with all power to the area restored at about 11.50am. Energex Australia said it was currently investigating the cause of the outage.

At the conference, Cisco Systems' Charney used his keynote to talk up a positive future for the Internet.

Charney described what he saw as a cycle of boom, bust and then build-out, using the examples of technologies such as the lightbulb and telephone. "The bust period is where we are argueably at today with the Internet," Charney said.

But he predicted that the Internet would also lead us out of this bust as it continued to become more and more mainstream. Charney said that the Internet was continuing to develop and improve, which is exactly the opposite of what you'd expect during a bust period for a technology.

Vivienne Fisher travelled to Coolum as a guest of Dimension Data.
