Philips wracked by vandalism and theft

In a series of incidents, which began when a window was broken late on Saturday night, Philips' offices in North Ryde were broken into once over the weekend and again on Monday night, sources have told ZDNet Australia.

In the first incident, vandals smashed a window and left before security forces arrived. The following day they returned, entering through the broken window and again escaping before security forces arrived on the scene to investigate the incident and board up the window.

In the early hours of Monday morning they returned, and again entered the premises unchallenged by ripping the boards off the window. This time the intruders smashed a security camera in order to protect their identities, and left a trail of destruction in their wake as they made their way through the building.

A NSW police spokeswoman confirmed police are investigating two break-ins, which occurred over the weekend at a -large electrical premises" on Epping Road, Sydney.

-Police were notified of the first break in at 10.15 am on 4th of August, nothing was stolen and a window was damaged," the spokeswoman said. -On Monday the 5th, at 12.45am, police were notified of a second break and enter on the same premises. This time a glass door was smashed and computers were stolen."

Patrick Southam, corporate communications manager at Philips, refused to comment on the extent of the damage caused by the vandals, or whether Philips has increased security in the wake of the events.

-As far as I am concerned this is a non-event," Southam said. -I am not going to comment." Southam also refused to speculate whether the attacks might have been carried out by a disgruntled former employee, or discuss the contents of hand-written notes left by the vandals.

Police are appealing for anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Gladesville police on 02 9879 9699 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
