OpenTel in Australian sacking spree: source

Rumours are circulating that the Australian staff of telecommunications software company, Open Telecommunications, are bearing the brunt of its financial woes.

On Friday, OpenTel announced it was shedding 45 staff world-wide, but a tip-off to ZDNet Australia alleged that 40 of those staff were from the Melbourne office. The layoffs will cost the company AU$700,000, the company said in a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange.

Wayne Passlow, founder of OpenTel, was unable to provide comment when contacted by ZDNet Australia.

A spokesperson for the Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU), Ian Bryant, said that the layoffs came as no big shock. -OpenTel is a triumph of entrepreneurial ability over management strength - there's been people going for a while."

OpenTel also announced today that it has concluded an agreement to sell its OSS Business to OpenCI, a subsidiary of Macquarie Bank, for up to AU$3.1 million.
