Nokia Australia uncertain on mooted job cuts

Nokia Australia is uncertain of the local impact of its Finland-headquartered parent's decision to downsize its troubled network infrastructure division.

Following from a warning it gave mid-March that it expected to post a substantial Q1 loss, Nokia Networks announced last week it would cut 1,800 jobs across its global operations.

The company said that it would cut 1,100 employees from its Finnish network operation with the remaining 700 jobs to be shed from across its global operations.

Spokesperson for Nokia Australia, Antony Wilson, said that of the company's local operations, Nokia Networks Australia was the most vulnerable for any future downsizing decisions. However, he said the round of redundancies announced last week would have minimal impact on local headcount.

"On a global scale, Australia's [Nokia Networks] business is fairly small in that area, consequently [the job losses] will be minimal, if any, in Australia," said Wilson.

But while Nokia is playing down the possibility of local job losses, the company is mulling over contingency plans to offset redundancies in its network division.

"If there are impacts locally, we are increasing in other areas--for example in the mobile phone side of the business--so we would can look to see if we can move anyone affected into other areas, either locally or globally," said Wilson.
