Information security solutions provider Pointsec Mobile Technologies is gearing up to take on the Australian market after its official entry into the country a month ago.

Pointsec Australia managing director, Oscar Morén, said the company will be focusing on enterprise customers only, mainly in government departments, banking and finance, insurance companies and telecommunication companies.

Aided by automatic encryption and enforceable access control, the Swedish company provides businesses with technology that protects PCs and all types of mobile devices from intrusion and data theft.

One innovative feature Pointsec will be implementing in all its clients is the PicturePIN. PicturePIN is an alternative log in method wherein instead of using numerical keys, the user will be asked to key in a distinct sequence of pictures to get access to the mobile device.

"We encrypt everything that is stored in the mobile device. All information is encrypted including the ones in the memory card. Customers have the option to use the PicturePIN or the regular numerical PIN if they want. The reason we came up with the PicturePIN is because we see that many people have too many PIN codes to remember. We think it is easier for people to remember a story through pictures," Morén said.

He added that Pointsec is not concerned about competition in the Australian market as, he claimed, none of the vendors in Australia deliver the same range of mobile device coverage as that it does.

"We cover all mobile devices from laptops to PDAs to mobile phones and smart phones. There is no competitor in Australia because there is no other vendor covering all the devices that we do. There are local competitors that do parts of what we do, but there is no vendor doing the whole thing," Morén said.

Pointsec decided to finally enter the Australian market after a series of expressions of interest from Australian government agencies that are familiar with the company's work with the US army.

"We already knew about the Australian market before we came here. We've gotten a lot of interest, especially from the government sector, before we've gotten in the market. That's one of the main reasons why we've opened the branch," Morén said.

Morén said they have no plans to extend their services to private customers and will be focusing more on enterprises. Pointsec will be hiring its local staff by next year.
