NZ company races for a piece of online action

Virtual Spectator, a New Zealand-based 3D animation company that focuses on sport, has made its recently developed World Rally Championship program available online.

Fans of the World Rally Championship (WRC) will be able to subscribe to the service for US$9.95 per rally. According to International Sportsworld Communicators (ISC), which owns the television and commercial rights to the WRC. The total combined audience for the 13 rallies that make up the world rally was 4.81 billion in 2000.

The World Rally Virtual Spectator program combines photo realistic 3D maps with Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) technology to allow the recreation of each rally stage in a virtual environment. The program took two years to develop.

Subscribers will be able to watch and compare the performance of up to six cars using the 3D parallel racing feature, select their own camera angles and opt for various details on-screen such as car speeds and split times.

The online program is being launched at the Spanish Rally on March 22, and will allow Australian motorsport fans to follow the rally until it arrives in Perth in October.
