NEC Australia cuts 153 staff

The Australian operation of Japanese technology manufacturer NEC today said it would cut 153 staff as part of a local restructuring operation.

"In line with NEC's global strategy, NEC Japan will re-absorb the part of the local research and development group that was outsourced to Australia," the company said in a statement issued this afternoon, noting a business review was ongoing.

NEC Australia managing director Wataru Takeuchi said it was regrettable and a "difficult decision" that the company had been forced to cut staff, however, it was overall a positive move.

"The move is in direct response to feedback from customers that recognises the quality of our products and our depth of market expertise, yet found the previous nature of the organisation difficult to do business with," Takeuchi said. "The restructure will capitalise on our strengths and make NEC more effective and easy to work with."

As part of the restructure, NEC will divide its operations into four business units; Unified Communications, Managed Services, Network Solutions and Display Solutions.

NEC said it was committed to the Australian market, with its Melbourne-based research and development centre to still employ dedicated engineers and research staff. "NEC Australia remains the organisations' global centre for broadband access R&D and the company is committed to supporting jobs in Victoria and across Australia," NEC said.

The NEC Managed Services division is nothing but a disgrace!!! Fuelled by arrogance and harassment of staff, it’s no wonder people have left. I only hope management in this division are fired!

NEC lost in the wilderness Anonymous -- 02/04/09 (in reply to #320126979)

I worked at NEC for a short period last year as a contractor on a small project.

I found NEC great place to work. Fantastic engineers, great technology. But in my opinion, had lost the plot in leveraging off the good reputation it has/had build over the previous decades.

    Very poor product/business development.

An attitude that business would just walk in the door, rather than actually going out and proposing solution to customers.

Great engineers, crap sales and marketing and even worse business development.
