MelbourneIT terminates up to twenty resellers

The new regulatory scheme for the Australian domain space has already found its first victims, with MelbourneIT reportedly terminating the contracts of up to 20 of its resellers.

Tom Valenta, spokesperson for MelbourneIT, told ZDNet Australia that between a dozen and 20 resellers had their contracts terminated following the recent go-live of the new domain name registration system. Under the old system MelbourneIT (MIT) was the only registrar for the .au domain space.

-We've looked at resellers who don't or won't comply with the auDA code of conduct and are therefore unsuitable for us as partners going forward," said Valenta.

auDA CEO Chris Disspain said that under the new rules registrars are obliged under the terms of their agreement with auDA to ensure that resellers agree to be bound by the code of practice, and that auDA can instruct registrars to take action against resellers.

-Under the previous regime there was no control over resellers save for their contract with MIT," said Disspain.

Valenta said that under the old system MelbourneIT was in a predominant market position, and he claims it had concerns about the legality of terminating contracts because resellers had nowhere else to go. Additionally, the code of practice only came in at the end of last year to provide a benchmark to measure resellers against.

-The concerns that we had about certain of our resellers were highlighted when the code of practice came up," said Valenta. He added that although MelbourneIT was constantly reviewing its relationships with resellers, there were no plans to terminate any more contracts.

This law should never have been passed.
There was nothing wrong with how it was,,
Now it's just a big peice of **** as far as i'm concerned.

MelbourneIT was doing a fine job and I can not see why the stupid law was passed.

Maybe they should look a telstra and pass a few laws in their direction. (HINT HINT ADSL price plans and capped limits.)

Dont buy to MelbourneIT, and Cydian because i have send at least 30 mails and the register key form with no answer, I'm trying to change my contact e-mail and the register key that cydian gave to me does not work.
MelbourneIT and Cydian have the worst service i have seen.

Who the hell can you believe in this God-forsaken internet world. As a newbie with my first domain name I chose to register it with Cydian Technologies in Melville New York - for no better reason than that it seemed as good as any - if you believe it's advertising !!!!!!
I then renewed it in 2002 for 5 years, was billed for 5 years by Cydian and as far as I was concerned that was that. I then got a flyer from some domain registrar saying that my domain expied this year and would I renew with them. When I checked Whois I found they were right. I e.mailed Cydian Technologies four times over three months and received one acknowledgement from them. Eventually, with time running out, I phoned them and spoke to a woman with all my e.mails on my desk. She said she could do nothing as someone had changed the registrar from Melbourne IT, which she said they used to another registrar whom they didn't use. Full stop. So she had sat on them and done nothing. I told her that Cydian Technologies had clearly renewed my domain name but only for two yeats instead of the five years I had paid for and which they had acknowledged. They are into my ribs for about $67 dollars and are making no efforts at all to repay me. More important I stand to lose my domain name as well and they don't give a bloody damn about that either. Can you imagine some idiot sitting with four e.mails from (the first one) about three and a half months ago and doing nothing about it. She's either too thick to get out of bed on a morning or, more likely, some-one has told her to ignore it and hope I'll go away (and they are $67 to the good) Can you think of another excuse ? Where Melbourne IT fit into this I don't know.
    Do you ?
