A unanimous California jury on Thursday dismissed claims that IBM had knowingly endangered two of its former employees by exposing them to hazardous materials that eventually gave them cancer.

The verdict hands a significant victory to the semiconductor industry, which for years has been dogged with allegations of unsafe working conditions in plants in the 1970s and 1980s. As one of the first complaints to go to trial against IBM, the closely watched trial had become a flashpoint for the issue, potentially affecting the outcome in hundreds of similar pending cases.
