Jobs surge gives Aussie IT execs hope

A 52 percent month-on-month rise in demand for Australian information technology executives in September has prompted consulting group E.L. Consult to claim the worst is over.

However, E.L. Consult noted the increase was off a small base, and still leaves demand for IT executives at just over half what it was in September last year, just before demand fell dramatically. Grant Montgomery, managing director of E.L Consult, told ZDNet Australia the rise indicated a change in direction of the market, after the IT sector had "over-corrected itself by a pretty substantial amount".

"In trend terms this quarter it's starting to get off the ground," said Montgomery. "I think it's likely to continue, you can discount one month but when you see a slow and steady getting-off-the-ground it indicates a long term trend."

The spurt in demand for IT executives contributed to a national growth in demand for executives of nine percent from August to September. This brings it almost to the level of demand in September 2001.

-This month's rise in executive demand was also encouraging because it occurred without a positive contribution from two of Australia's biggest States," said Montgomery. -Declining figures in NSW and Queensland reinforced the strength of the [overall] upturn across Australia."

-Surveys of business intentions are now suggesting that capital investment is set to rise 14 per cent this financial year," he added.
