Workers at IBM's Baulkham Hills, Sydney facility were not happy with the offer IBM presented them yesterday, and have sent representatives back to negotiate, according to the Australian Services Union (ASU).

The employees in the company's Flightdeck at Baulkham Hills had been prepared to strike for better pay and conditions. However, IBM agreed in a meeting just over a week ago to present a new employment offer to the disgruntled employees.

Union members within the company met last night to consider the offer. They decided they were not happy with it as it stood and have sent their representatives back to negotiate "with a clear message that there must be more progress made on the deal", the ASU said this morning.

Negotiations would continue today, the ASU said, with the next meeting with IBM to occur on Monday, after which options would be considered.

An IBM spokesperson told ZDNet.com.au the company was continuing to talk to employees at the site.

This is a standard tactic for companies trying to avoid dealing with unions - keep offering to negotiate without actually offering what staff want, and hope staff will eventually give up.

Unfortunately for IBM, union negotiators are professionals who can play this game too.

    1. What is IBM up to? Anonymous -- 13/09/08

After all the bad publicity you'd think IBM would just sort it out, afterall it's just 50 or so workers isn't it? why risk more damaging media? In the end, unless they bury this, more bad publicity can only hurt IBM no matter what the outcome. This makes them look like they can't fix even simple workforce issues

It's not just 50 workers. This has big ramifications to all their other disgruntled workers.

Those 50 are a beach head if you will. If IBM gives in, you can bet there will be all manner of other divisions lining up for their share too.

    3. Backed self into corner? Anonymous -- 14/09/08

Due to it's unwillingness or inability to negotiate IBM could have backed itself into a corner with this one.

If the ASU wins expect big inroads into IBM for organised labour.

If IBM stands it's ground it's customers could feel the brunt of possible actions.

The root cause of this dispute could very well be the way IBM deals with all it's employees not just this group.

  2. Congratulations to the workers Anonymous -- 14/09/08

They are showing IT workers that they don't have to be pathetic drones worrying about the next layoff or if they've offended someone or other.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if IT companies treated their staff like human beings instead of expendable, low rate and low rent resources.
