Hutchison to boost 3G security and performance

Hutchison Telecommunications will increase the performance and security of its third generation (3G) high speed mobile phone service in Australia by upgrading its Cisco network.

Hutchison, which already employs Cisco's routers and switches, said on Wednesday it was upgrading its data centre in Sydney with the Cisco 12000 Series routing platform and deploying Cisco's Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to help detect viruses and any unusual activity.

Victa McClelland, chief technical officer at Hutchison -- the operator of "3" in Australia - said the upgrade will improve the efficiency of data sorting and transmission over its Gigabit Ethernet network.

"Our 3G network is one of the most advanced in the world. The new Cisco equipment will further strengthen what is already a solid IP data network environment, enabling our customers to continue enjoying interactive mobile communication services with industry-leading security," said McClelland.

In February, Hutchison annual results revealed that the company had more than doubled its revenues over the previous year and increased its mobile customer base by 113 percent to 879,000.
