Hutchison bunkers down with Union

Ailing telecommunications player Hutchison is meeting with Union officials this morning to discuss impending redundancies.

The meeting, which was due to commence at about 9am, follows the Communications and Public Sector Union's (CPSU) lodgement late yesterday afternoon of an application for an interim redundancy award with the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC).

The Union has raised concerns that there are inadequate retrenchment provisions available under workers' contracts.

When asked what was to be discussed at the meeting CPSU assistant secretary, communications sector, Stephen Jones said: "We want to find out what's going on...If there are any plans for job cuts, if so how many and to discuss an approach to that."

The Communications Union notified ZDNet Australia Friday morning that it was anticipating layoffs to begin yesterday. However, after the Union intervened and requested that it be informed prior to redundancy announcements it received an undertaking from Hutchison lawyers Friday afternoon that there would be no layoffs made Monday.

Jones said there would be a hearing at the AIRC sometime this week, possibly Thursday, where it will be decided if an interim redundancy award is to be made.

Hutchison has been contacted for comment.
