Hotmail to dump inactive members

Microsoft has told members of its free Hotmail service that their e-mail accounts will be closed if they do not use them at least once a month.

"Accounts reaching 30 days of inactivity are formally deactivated and all messages, folders, and contacts are permanently deleted," the software giant told Hotmail users in an e-mail Wednesday.

The rule does not apply to its MSN Hotmail Extra Storage accounts, which cost US$12.95 per year and provide five times more storage space, the company said.

During the early days of the commercial Web, people often signed up for multiple e-mail accounts at different portals--sometimes creating new accounts for no other reason than because they had forgotten previous passwords or IDs. Since the name of the game at the time was to show growing numbers of members to attract more advertising, portals often looked the other way, in deference to their inflated membership numbers.

But Microsoft's move comes at a time when companies are trying to lower the cost of providing free services while also trying to migrate people to premium services.

I think this is fair enough, MS are wanting to clear up some space on their massive server farm that is Hotmail. Altho, I don't think a month is long enough. Six months of inactivity would be better.

I agree that one month is not long enough. I have been travelling for weeks at a time where there is no public internet access even in fairly large towns and resorts in central Europe. What about someone who is in hospital in intensive care for weeks. They would loose all their messages. Another reason to avoid Microsoft always.

Others adversely affected by this unreasonably short timeframe would be service personell. It is not always practical for them to have server specific email addresses so free services are the answer but access is not always available to them. One would think especially at the moment such companies would take account that cercumstances do not always permit easy internet access (I don't think there are many internet cafe's in the middle of war zones)!

    So what's new?
Soon after Micro$oft took it over, they started this policy, though with 60 day period.

I only used it occasionally, for convenience really. But I had been a member almost since it started, and thus had quite a good email address: andreww@hotmail.com

However I agree with Greg. Who cares? It was always slow, spam-filled, insecure, and unreliable.

If you need a web-based one, their are now lots of better alternatives. While travelling recently, I even found yahoo quite good (now better than mail.com at accesing remote mailboxes anyhow!).

What's the point of this. If you can't get to a computer, you lose your e-mail. To some people, E-mail is life. I'm a student and i don't have a credit card,so I can't pay for extra storage. It's a disgrace Microsoft is doing this!

what above ppl visiting other countries that cant get to a PC to check their emails?? If they travel for more than 30+ days, then their account will be deactivated. This is not fair to those ppl.

I think i have to agree with most of the comments stating that 30 days is simply not long enough.

On Wednesday the 1st September early morning I signed into my hotmail address, I had not signed in for around 30 days but my address was still there with all my contacts, I sent an email to a nepalese friend to see if he was OK as he had indicated that he was going overseas to work. When I attempted to sign in on the 2 September to check if he was still in Nepal and alive, I was unalbe to sign back into my email address, I had lost everything, I think this is outrageous as I will never be able to obtain a lot of my contacts addresses so will have lost contact with them forever. Please forward a response to the email address below and re- instate my hotmail and my contacts.

Working on various Stations in outback Oz where not every station can get internet let alone access to email. My only contact sometimes with friends is when I come off the property and email friends and family to up-date news! It's bloody hard enough with satelight phones and TV. Fair-go please!
