Gartner expects strong sales growth from Dell Australia

Soon to be released Australian figures on PC sales are expected to mimic worldwide trends, with Dell gaining ground on industry heavyweight Compaq, according to research company Gartner.

-It's going to pretty much reflect what's happening around the world," industry analyst Andy Woo told ZDNet Australia. The international figures show Dell increasing worldwide market share from 15.7 percent to 17.8 percent of the Intel-based market.

-If you ask me, Dell is going from strength to strength," Woo said. -The preliminary figures from Australia show Dell's market share at around 11 percent, as a ball park figure. This shows they're maintaining much of the momentum from Q4, they're showing steady growth from last year."

However, Compaq has maintained its number-one position both domestically and internationally, according to Gartner. Worldwide figures show Compaq's market share reasonably stable at 22.8 percent, representing 242,000 units. IBM was in third place worldwide, dropping slightly from 14.5 to 14.3 percent market share.

Preliminary figures indicate the total server market for Australia will be flat compared to the last quarter, although showing around five percent growth compared to the first quarter 2001, according to Gartner. -That's a rebound from a very, very, low base," Woo said. -It's still relatively weak."
