E-Store: the inside story

The seeds of the e-tailer's demise may have been sown when a contractual relationship with major IT distributor Tech Pac, came to a close, according to an E-Store ex-employee who spoke exclusively with ZDNet Australia yesterday.

-There had always been problems with paying our suppliers," the source said. -For the most part we were only given very small lines of credit, and it was virtually like dealing with cash most of the time."

According to the source, E-Store had entered stormy waters when Tech Pac changed an all-important distribution relationship earlier in the year. E-Store initially acquired stock information directly from the Tech Pac Web site, and although the e-tailer would host the transaction, Tech Pac would carry out delivery.

-Things changed back in March or April when Tech Pac decided they wanted to deliver to us in bulk, and we would have to organise our warehousing and dispatch," the source explained. -but we didn't have the infrastructure to do all that so we began to look for different suppliers."

Faced with the low credit limits generally applied to new customers, E-Store was forced to operate on a purely cash basis, the source said, as lines of credit were quickly exhausted. To add fuel to the fire, the source believes stock information displayed on the E-Store Web site was still based on data from the Tech Pac site, providing an inaccurate picture of stock availability.

-The site would say we had twenty in stock but in reality we didn't know how many units our suppliers had in stock, so fulfilling orders became a real problem," said the source.

At this stage, the source recounts when the company's problems began to snowball, with customers angry at partially fulfilled orders, and slowing sales leading to staff cuts.

-In August the entire call centre was closed down, at least half the staff were laid off, and the pressure on the ones that remained was incredible," the source said.

Not only were the remaining staff faced with an increased work load as a result of the initial round of sackings, they were also having to face increasing levels of dissatisfaction among customers.

-One of the biggest problems was that credit cards were being charged before stock was delivered, and stock was being delivered really late because we were sourcing it from wherever we could find it," explained the source.

The last straw came last week when remaining E-Store employees were told to go home, and think about looking for alternative employment, the source alleged.

-It is hard to find work out there at the moment so of course everyone was worried," the source said. -It is a real shame, the company itself is quite good, and the people working there were a great team. With some proper management in place you could really make a go of it."

The E-Store site is still taking orders. Why hasn't the administrator closed down the site?

You know these guys ripped me off totally big time and now it looks like they will get away with it. I have heard of heaps of other people that estore took their money and got a fat zero.
I thought it was illegal to take money and not supply the goods. If they could not supply why take the money. hope they end up in jail and sweat it our for a few years. I will never buy anything off the net again !!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't get it, they took my money and now gone broke, that is fair enough, but why are they still taking orders, there is little news out there about their situation and most of people don't know about them gone broke, isn't this misleading!!!!! Where the hell is ACCC and consumer protection group??!! This is just so despicable.

Well i don't know about the rest of you. But I will take legal ation. What they have done is broken the law. I don't believe thay have announced they are bankrupt so thier are still funds in the company. And i plan on getting my item. I don't believe we should just sit back and take this ****.

After reading your editorial I can only think your "inside source" is making 'palatable' excuses for a clearly mis-managed company.
I think its reasonable to assume your "inside source" is still an employee and perhaps feeding you information that portrays an image of a company wronged, unfortunate and capable of trading again; once proper management is in place. Perhaps they have a motive or have they been motivated to say that ? Perhaps I'm reading too much into it. Whatever the case there is no excuse for poor management, poor financial control and a total lack of responsibility shown towards thier paying clients and their employees.
Voluntary administration now provides the directors with a way to get out of the mess they have created with minimal impact to them personally. Provided of course the administrators can persuade the secured creditors to 'hang in there' and let them trade out of trouble.
I pity all the creditors, former employees and the individuals who ordered and paid for their products in good faith and will most likely receive nothing.
Its clear that etores directors had vision and enthusiasm for estore and there is no doubt the concept was good but their obvious lack of training and experience was the real reason for their financial woes.
In your editorial your "source" complained about estores small credit limits, but from my information at least one supplier was left high and dry for $250,000. Wish I could get a 'small' credit limit like that someday ! If estore was under capitalised then thats not the fault of the supplier. Its always easy to make excuses and blame this company or that person for ones downfall after the event, but how many directors do you hear blaming themselves, almost never.
Now a most interesting question poses itself; can estore trade its way out of trouble under the administrators control ? If estore still has some loyal clients out there then they will need every last one to keep its head above water.

Glad to see I am not the only one who was ripped off....these guys are absolute losers - not wonder they went broke !!!!

My order was only a paultry $67.00 or so and was charged but did not arrive - not that I hold hope now.

Is anyobe else looking at taking legal action against these losers ? I am definitely looking to do it.

BTW if you are looking for a good online etailer try either www.techbuy.com.au or www.buyquick.com.au I have used both and they are great - good service as well.

For people who wish to take legal action against estore please get in touch with me, the more people the more chance we can get our money back. I don't believe they can just take my $418 and says 'sorry, we have gone broke, tough luck.' If they can get away with this then I guess I can just walk into a bank and borrow $10000 and spend it all then tell them 'I gone broke, tough luck.' If I knew this I would rather donate the money to charity instead of giving them to cover their debts.

I always suspected that there was something fishy about their whole operation, They were selling them too cheap with very little profit margin.
And on top of that they cannot deliver the goods.

Luckily for me, I was able to detect their shonky practices after my 2nd order, When I try to purchase a drive from them. They promised 2-4 days delivery, 2 Weeks later I still haven't receive the goods and to make matters worse they even charged my credit cards.

That was the last straw...So good riddance!

I ordered a printer that never arrived. I could not call anyone to find out where the order was at and my emails were not being responded to. Finally I sent an email asking to cancel the order and please refund my money, and guess what? They did. A week later my credit card was re-credited with the charge. So if you want a refund, ask.

I ordered a Palm handheld on August 31 and they took the money on September 2 ... still no delivery. I've sent two faxes and several e-mails, with only one acknowledgement on Friday that my enquiry would be processed within two working days. I've reported E-Store to the NSW Department of Fair Trading. The company must have been trading while insolvent (still are?). I'm going to try and get the credit card transaction cancelled. That seemed to work for the Ansett customers when they went bust.

there seems little we can do right now. just hoping something will come up in tomorrow's creditor's meeting. again, people who paid by credit cards please contact your bank asap to file a credit card dispute. for people who paid by direct deposit like myself, the only thing we can do now is hoping for a miracle.

no one knows why they are still trading whilst insolvent, i would love to hear a good excuse for that, guess that's for DFT to find out.

and please warn other people who are plannin' to buy from estore. there is little news about them going broke and i don't want to see anyone else to fall into the trap.

THANKS FOR THE GREAT WORK AND STORIES.

I WAS GRATEFUL TO ONLY LOSE AROUND 70 BUCKS IN THIS FIASCO. I CANNOT BELEIVE THAT E-STORE IS ALLOWED TO CONTINUE WITHOUT ANY GUARANTEE OF SUPPLY. A REASON FOR THEIR DEMISE IS THEIR POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. I AM AN AVID NET PURCHASER BUT WILL NEVER DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY AGAIN...

Estore wasn't trying to rip people off - they were just incompetent.
I ordered a rio 500 mp3 player and after waiting about a month and discovering that it "was not possible" to get an estimated delivery time i cancelled the order and got a refund on my credit card. Estore were quite happy to refund and very apologetic.
3 weeks later a rio 500 was delivered to me.
I had to call estore and convince them that i REALLY had cancelled my order.
I don't think they were trying to rip anyone off....they were simply incompetent.
