The Department of Defence announced that upgrades to its financial management system are underway with the Resource and Output Management and Accounting Network (ROMAN) going live on Wednesday.
"This marks an important milestone in improving Defence's information management systems," said the department's acting CIO Peter Lambert in a statement today.
The launch of "ROMAN" -- the department's financial management system -- on Wednesday is the initial step in the department's wider upgrade from its original 1999 system to SAP's latest package ECC6.
"The project's first-stage focus was on a software and infrastructure upgrade that has modernised the ROMAN application, which SAP will support until at least 2014," said Lambert.
The upgrade was completed on schedule and implemented by a combined team of Defence and CSC personnel, he said.
Defence also said that system security has been improved as a result of the upgrade.
The department ran over 20,000 training courses for ROMAN users through a combined process of e-learning and face-to-face training.
Work on the second stage of the upgrade is expected to be complete by July 2008.
The announcement comes as the DoD prepares to welcome its new CIO Greg Farr at the end of the month, who was lured to the department from the ATO.
