The NSW Department of Community Services (DoCS) has hired Hewlett-Packard Australia's former chief information officer to head up its technology function.
"Mr Kerry Holling has been appointed as DoCS' new chief information officer," a statement issued by the department to ZDNet Australia this morning said. "He will begin working at DoCS on 5 February 2007".
ZDNet Australia exclusively reported that Holling left HP in June last year, after more than 16 years with HP and its acquisitions Compaq and Digital. At the time he was believed to be taking some personal time out before re-entering the marketplace.
The DoCS statement said Holling and his team at the department would work to implement a new information management and technology strategic plan over the next couple of years.
Holling has an honours degree in Computer Science from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.
He is a high profile member of the Australian technology community due to his previous roles, as well as his time on the board of the Australian Information Industry Association.
DoCS started its search for a new CIO in August last year after incumbent Richard Michel relocated to Paris, France in December 2005. Marilyn Taylor has been acting in the CIO role since that time.
According to DoCS' initial advertisement, Holling will attract a remuneration package of between AU$166,451 and AU$189,100 annually.
Holling's new role is one of the highest technology positions within the NSW state government. Gaining the position means Holling will also sit on the NSW Government CIO Executive Council, the principal forum for ICT strategy within the state government.
