The mass redundancy, on Monday, comes as a result of slowed business in the e-commerce integration sector stemming from the IT market correction, according to national operations manager David Bowie.
-A lot of the (e-commerce) business was aportioned by the dot-com phenomenon. We had a lot of customers in the dot-com sector. But that business has slowed down considerably," he said.
In a statement issued to staff yesterday, chairman David Shein explained the move was part of the company's refocusing on its -traditional" customer base.
-The focus is now on our traditional customer base as opposed to the dot-coms," he said. -We have had to re-balance our skill sets and this has led to a number of positions being redundant."
Bowie said most employees affected by the sackings were -hands-on" technical staff, including developers. Com Tech did not plan to sack any more staff from its online division. That leaves 220 employees in the online department.
Bowie said Dimension Data, which ended a four-year courtship with Com Tech by fully acquiring the company in late 2000, had -absolutely zero influence" over the move.
