CSIRO snags govt portal deal

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has clinched a deal with the government to help link users with federal Web services.

The CSIRO will work with the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) to help citizens access e-government information and help online via the australia.gov.au portal, which receives over 500,000 visitors a month.

The deal is part of the Australian Government Online Service Point (AGOSP) initiative, an AU$42.4 million which will give portal users a personalised entry point to e-government services.

Currently, users have to re-enter their details every time they access services provided by different government departments, a process found to be "frustrating and time consuming" in AGIMO satisfaction surveys.

The AGOSP will be delivered in two phases: the first by December 2008, the second at the end of 2010.

The CSIRO has previously worked for the Government Information Management Office to produce a search facility for the government portal.
