CIOs struggle with IT budget tradeoffs

CIOs and CEOs are tackling cultural change to support CRM, security and privacy in their organisations, with budget crunch forcing them to make tough decisions.

Steve Bittinger, research director at analyst Gartner, believes that companies are having to become successful in security, privacy, and CRM.

Bittinger said he has spoken with a lot of clients about the relationship between these three issues, and that the feedback he received was that it was a challenge for organisations to be good at all of them.

-Many organisations falsely jump into the technologies too quickly," Bittinger said, adding that a lot of CIOs, and CEOs as well, are struggling.

He warns that it's crucial for organisations to get the architecture and policy right first, which will support the objectives of privacy and security.

Bittinger urges CIOs to recognise that the ultimate goal is for the enterprise to develop cultural change to support CRM, security, and privacy. -Every interaction they have with the business has to be set against that backdrop," he advised. -This is often a struggle for IT people to see IT from this high level perspective."

He also said that the types of questions he most often gets from organisations were, 'how can I get more money to pay for more security?', describing it as -business in a budget crunch situation".

The common question from CIOs and IT people right now is, 'Is this really necessary?', Bittinger said.
