A spokesperson for Bankwest confirmed his departure today. A search to replace him was underway, the spokesperson added, with transition arrangements already in place.

According to a report in the Australian Financial Review, Clasquin wrote an email to colleagues and friends on his departure in which he said he'd been "on the go" for around 30 years and wanted to take a break. Afterwards, he intended to start a new Sydney-based role which he'd lined up for 2011.

The Bankwest spokesperson said he was not aware of Clasquin's plans.

Clasquin would likely have had a busy last year in his role, planning integration activities for the bank to fit into new parent Commonwealth Bank. The IT integration is planned for 2011, when Commonwealth Bank plans to have completed its core banking overhaul.

Bankwest's addition to the Commonwealth Bank had meant that an extra $150 million had to be added to its core banking war chest.
