Australian recruiters urge caution on IT jobs climb

Australian job indexes tracking the number of IT jobs being listed are registering a slight pick up in the market. But is this enough for IT pros on the hunt for work?

Surveys conducted by recruitment consultancies have been showing an increase in the numbers of IT jobs being listed over past months. Olivier's Internet Job Index for May, released yesterday, found a 2.5 percent increase in the numbers of IT&T jobs advertised online. This followed E.L Recruit's survey finding a 26 percent increase in executive IT recruitment over the past month.

Yet industry pundits are still urging caution.

In releasing its latest figures, Daisy Hoffmann, research analyst at Olivier, whose Internet job index surveys jobs listed on sites such as seek.com.au, mycareer.com.au, and careerone.com.au, warned against too much optimism.

-In the last month IT&T vacancies grew off a period of decline," Hoffman said.

However, she added that despite two consecutive months of increases in job listings the IT&T sector hasn't shown the same rate of recovery as other industry sectors Olivier surveys.

According to Hoffman, the IT&T sector has stayed fairly flat over the past six months, going up or down by about two percent.

-The general trend has been for it to remain steady," Hoffman said. -The 2.5 percent upswing in IT&T means there are almost 200 new jobs...but the sector has lost 15,900 jobs in the past 12 months."

Amongst the IT&T job types surveyed by Olivier, database development and administration had increased over figures from April; hardware engineering systems had dropped slightly, as had system administration and support. Internet graphics and multimedia had also increased.
